Photo Location in Tokyo: Teamlab

Teamlab Planet photoshoot of an American solo traveler in Tokyo

Teamlab can be described as digital, interactive (Teamlab app required) art experience. It is fun for everyone and a great idea to visit, especially when the weather does not turn out well. It is highly recommended to book your ticket in advance as it is sold out quickly, especially during high tourist seasons such as Spring or the yearend.

The ideal timing to take great photos will be either the first time slot in the morning (might be sold out months in advance during peak seasons) or in the evening before the closing time. You can purchase your Teamlab Planets ticket directly from their respective homepage below.

Currently there are two Teamlab exhibitions in Tokyo: Planet in Odaiba and Borderless in Azabudai Hills. Although they are quite similar in nature, the concepts are somewhat different. Planet offers more interactive experience with your senses & body while Borderless immerses you with digital arts and discovery. In any cases, you cannot go wrong with either of them.

Notes:

  • Although the area is quite large and you can easily spend 2+ hours to enjoy and experience different rooms, due to the crowded space and extreme light conditions, it would be difficult to photograph a group larger than 3-4 members.

  • I would recommend 2-hour session for you to enjoy and for us to get some great photos.

  • For Teamlab Planet- before entering the exhibition; you will have to spend 15- 20 minutes to get in a queue; change outfit (optional), put your belongings in the locker; and watch the introductory video.

  • For Teamlab Borderless- Abazudai Hills complex is very confusing to navigate, even local people get lost. Please aim to arrive 15- 20 minutes prior to the meeting time to ensure you have an ample time to locate the Teamlab exhibition within the complex.

  • There will be areas with floor mirrors (both) and another one filled with water up to your knee level (only Planet). Be prepared to wear something appropriate.

  • Clothing tips: Light/ white colors work better as there will be various scenes with different patterns and colorful lights. Avoid outfits with too much visible patterns/ logos.

  • Bring some cash with you for the teahouse inside. It offers a very unique experience :)

  • Enjoy your experience!
