Thinking about proposing in Tokyo? You’re in the right place! Planning a surprise proposal in Tokyo is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming. Timing, location, crowds, lighting, and staying discreet all matter, especially if you want the moment captured naturally.
I'm Kan, a Tokyo-based photographer specializing in surprise proposal photography. Since 2015, I've helped couples from over 50 countries plan and capture their proposal moment across Tokyo, from quiet gardens to iconic skyline views without giving away the surprise.
Most couples worry about one thing first: how do you photograph a surprise without ruining it? Here's the short version, full planning guidance is in my Ultimate Guide to Surprise Proposal Photoshoots in Tokyo.
Staying discreet. Rather than having me appear out of nowhere which rarely works well in practice. I'm usually introduced beforehand as a "travel photographer" documenting your trip, a local guide, or a friend. Your partner gets to enjoy the moment fully prepared (hair, outfit, etc.) while the proposal itself stays a complete surprise.
Choosing a realistic location. Cinematic photos and a comfortable proposal don't always come from the same spot. Busy intersections and famous photo spots often mean crowds, noise, and only 50–60 seconds before you need to move on. I'll help you choose a location that's quiet enough to propose comfortably, but still delivers beautiful, true-to-Tokyo photographs; a peaceful garden, a shrine, a skyline view, or a private setting if you'd prefer.
Planning around weather and season. Tokyo weather can shift fast, and cherry blossom season books out months ahead. I build a backup plan into every proposal session so a sudden rain shower or a missed bloom peak doesn't derail your day.

Proposal sessions start from US$250 for 1 hour, with most couples booking 2 hours to include a full engagement session afterward. Pricing depends on location, time of day, and any extra planning support — for unique or elaborate ideas (private venues, boat cruises, special arrangements), a concierge add-on is available.
No — most sessions include an engagement portrait segment right after the proposal, once the initial emotion settles, so you also walk away with relaxed couple photos from the same day.
'm introduced ahead of time under a low-key cover story (travel photographer, local guide, or friend) so I can be close enough to capture the moment naturally, without your partner suspecting anything.
Tokyo weather can be unpredictable, especially outside the dry winter months. I keep a backup location and plan in mind for every booking so a proposal can still go ahead comfortably if the weather turns. Clear umbrellas also make the photos more romantic!
Yes — this is most of what the planning consultation covers. I'll recommend a location based on the season, time of day, your style, and how private or scenic you'd like it to be, factoring in realistic crowd levels (not just how a place looks in photos).
For cherry blossom season (late March–early April), 1–3 months ahead is recommended. For the rest of the year, 2–4 weeks is usually enough — though earlier is always safer if your dates are fixed.
es. For couples wanting something more elaborate — a private venue, a boat cruise, special decorations — I offer a concierge planning add-on. More on creative proposal ideas here →
